Thrombocytopenia or low platelet count

Thrombocytopenia is the term for a reduced platelet (thrombocyte) count. Thrombocytopenia is an abnormally low level of platelets in the blood. Thrombocytopenia may stem from failed platelet production, splenic sequestration of platelets, increased platelet destruction or use, or dilution of platelets. Platelets are nonnucleated cells derived from megakaryocytes in the bone marrow, which normally live in the peripheral circulation for as long as 10 days. Thrombocytopenia occurs when platelets are lost from the circulation faster than they can be replaced from the bone marrow where they are made.
